I will be beginning with the basics, San Pedro and its various Cousins, Lophophora Williamsii and see how they go!

This year santa shopped at Koehres-kaktus.de & brought a bunch o' seeds!
I have recently become intrigued by the unusually large amount of phytomorphological variation there is throughout the Lophophora williamsii species. Variation can be seen between almost every wild 'population' of lophos. The population of wild plants is recorded from the nearest geographical region such as a town name or national park name. Plants can vary in petal colour, size, epidermis colour, pupping style etc. These variations have been documented and studied but I am sure there is nothing quite like seeing them for yourself.
I have re-examined my germination technique & I am confident that this will be my most successful sow yet! I am planning on sowing all of my seeds onto petri dishes. This will benefit my germination rate & increase seedling mortality.
It will eliminate all need for organic matter at this fragile stage which often kill my seeds from either insect attack or mould; the seedlings will be less likely to be accidentally damaged and it allows for much easier storage & labelling of seedlings.

Being on a budget meant that I couldn't buy every variation of lophophora on the internet (though I dream to). I chose the following varieties after reading that they were either the most beautiful, interesting or outstanding in some way.

Lophophora williamsii var. A L.williamsii will be grafted onto every branch that is produced, currently only two branched have grafts on them. The first grafted 3/02/11 succumb to slug attack & cat damage but has recovered remarkably well & is pupping wildly which is unusual for this solitary growing lophophora variety. Now is a good a time as any to get back onto it. I am happily welcoming summer weather here in N.Z and my plants are too! Everything has awoken from its winter dormancy & has began to grow again. My obsessive interest in ethnobotanicals & psychoactive cacti has re-erupted, I have so many plans, many of which i'll share on here to keep myself informed as well as document their growth.
I feel I have allot to learn from the peyote spirit this year.Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-22929969267609943922010-06-07T02:53:00.000-07:002010-06-07T03:14:31.521-07:00Tobacco Plants, Nicotiana tabacumI sowed some Nicotiana tabacum seeds that I brought from trademe. The seeds were organically grown in NZ so they are acclimatised to this environment. This could account for the success of the germination rate! As with the poppies I have had a massive surplus of plants & therefore I have chosen the most successful plants to be planted out.

I greatly underestimated the size of the tobacco leaves! I thought that a 10cm soil bag would be enough space for the plants. It is now clearly visible that they are going to become very root bound. However I have no other way to grow them due to the lack of space. I am treating this grow as an experiment. I have no way of harvesting & using the tobacco as this requires a lengthy Curing process. I would need to build a special unit/room for this process. I would love to do this in the future sometime.

Here are some pics of my shabby crops. The tobacco plants are in the black soil bags (with the F-OFF sized leaves):

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh68OoepzZ_0tCKm8LWt77LlvmJ2ETclWR9LDRY6soG0Y5KHsy99POCoXe8bXS86p-vo_YqYTuXwPIb2CligAhuh9BmvV-cu72FiIKrVu8Wap_dzqMCVreLuoo0RqnjXrHOgRDATRpMN4Y/s400/P6060144.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479971170518142114" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijM9NuqulBV62fyS5PoBSpFnaEX8QJdvPHgEM_L3iYi15Eyu0fhWHOFmo3FBn240CcU27Z9Hmdul9TNOGa1Hj-8A1h7yxcJvoNO7Etk3Cr0wOR8gGFNTTFnysbFKyJi0Pq9iAwmYNEH48/s400/P6060143.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479971160602014802" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY4_AJDxudXiZgBl8E5gQlOFGn0zPg0KfqRgVzFfBfEc2fzeKWYoFTStmVvQM_-B3-luIVfFxwHQdYczEUkz9NdXqvgd3gOgqAdHbmee6YDT6yfUsH7x5NylLG8XO8hPlAWXhoVW0KxA0/s400/P6060142.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479965987963354898" />

The leaves have also taken a battering from some bastard caterpillars since I planted them out! I had always intended to grow poppies, but I was going to wait until spring to plant them out. However I heard that in NZ many farmers sow seeds in Autumn as the weather is still warm enough to germinate sub-tropical species & the winters don't get dangerously cold (no frost). This method allows the plants to slowly establish themselves over winter so they can really benefit from the Spring & Summer conditions & push out some higher crop yields.

I followed a brief poppy growing guide I found on the internet (Species Short Track), but due to limited space I was forced to sow the seeds across 8 large plant pots I brought. They germinated readily and filled the surface of all of the pots! I have to say they were Very Successful! I have been systematically picking out the smaller plants & will continue doing so until I am left with 1-2 plants in each pot.

Here are some pics:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic0jzsvYrEL9U8Geizuh8LtcEwBtaC3K1L_qXnxG6-EcJ425Mxlp0V6DHYCh4ZIHEXBmfs48Jbs1eGBAX4zDyOeZW9rKenuBGHZXL-zShS62rwx8Qqlflg6gIEc1QiLQNGOAgZWZjfkj0/s400/P6060141.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479965978648295442" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY4_AJDxudXiZgBl8E5gQlOFGn0zPg0KfqRgVzFfBfEc2fzeKWYoFTStmVvQM_-B3-luIVfFxwHQdYczEUkz9NdXqvgd3gOgqAdHbmee6YDT6yfUsH7x5NylLG8XO8hPlAWXhoVW0KxA0/s400/P6060142.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479965987963354898" />

Unfortunately I have a distinct Lack of space to grow these plants in. The weather was partially humid at the time which probably promoted the mould.

However I moved on and attempted a re-graft a few weeks later when the weather was less moist. I have no idea exactly when I grafted this Lophophora Williamsii Var. Caespitosa but it must be about 2 months old by now. It was a small pup from my mother Var. Caespitosa. It took a while to show signs of the graft taking but it eventually plumped up!

I have taken it inside for the winter to make sure it doesn't develop a mould again. Also to protect it from the overly curious wildlife!

Here are some pics:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxeMr3E_mPkYVJRIWKJg7AHIltIm1OP_akcPTna3X7ww3pdeRzxkVK0plE3bQ968vViENJo4q32tVR5Fw8yzwTQflNCjx0Xfq543XSLh0vmUV82Nhe-Chhguiqyy8pkIdF2n0R3RXrq2o/s400/P6060131.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479957748299007458" />
I was hoping that the size of the rootstock will cause the Scion to show greater growth (this is what i've heard). It was a veritable twig for quite a while & I had my doubts if it would make it! But it seems with Salvia that the harder they fall - they harder they will come back! This this has grown to an epic bush in the 4 months I have had it! I have even begun to take my own clones off it (two so far).

Here is a few pictures:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwZhVIsAJrU7RKC8_r9g7CWpxCO8zVM-VFs7AQr6Kljw9-Tw4KWK4irjHjQQx0ILsRAYzmjDVDDfLLvPKgas4SeNZ8MWCULztGf7X1OSfveWSOTifnqYPNcEENEKbyB3xEMfQs0WozEEU/s400/P6060139.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479891785214991058" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguLJEuD_GflnvGe5hhirsRPsU01bb_cWggWv_KI_CvsRvun_fRnxNLEiGoFN0zo1sB7UV9YCjVT33wQr6JLAJBnN9-YKt0FRHy1hnKXDq1mOu9RLTU26Db6Mg9WWTJLXfvliduNO-fNjc/s400/P6060140.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479891802994041266" />

Here is a picture of how it looked after 10 days of being planted out.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTLcp6NuwIEofTguRzr78IlgTcB27ZBSzjm6vBBPrcD90janMc_J5sbTuoAidApYmap2T1U-2AQsTj1B1SPpmI91k7LczYj9T-7aRWiyIze8ysr4eBqli18g4Pbfp8FOpp8QhLacQJX-w/s400/P2160096.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439109851015833122" />
16/02/10Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-54281266067740267982010-06-06T21:34:00.000-07:002010-06-06T21:50:55.489-07:00Lophophora Williamsii SeedlingsThese seedlings were sown on the 14/11/09 so they are now 7.5 months old. As with the Trichocereus seedlings they have been deprived of regular watering over the past couple of months, so they are not as well developed as they could be! They have grown to 1+cm now though and all are ready to be grafted! I do intend to leave several as they are though as they are just so cute.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbUF63EooENh8HQ9Tdak9gdZ3FO3cCju4EadAAw4B5gZynQmuRg57dRuFi0x1DMOOuJ0CLhvwNP38iNfE9N3emoq1ZyjtNc5Vf4EKJ2DEPAN8g8Zh7qIUvrfR7fnGriHkYZrpkdGrKu44/s400/P6060128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479886673622935922" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJOqumN0LYcjFTC6tRgKCd1ZbW1I0WaATPdXO8ygZS_rPBKOjzBxVrc-c1KECoAg8n4YRCx_ic7QX_LiuW-son8Z57lFHmHh0mhASMZuOjeMo80Pt9j2W7duc_Tp8oWpHlrnFFKyDm_eI/s400/P6060130.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479886655585179986" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheKHvKNymxAWbGbstbrHFy0UNFV63UmaXIKXvsHEOn7lehJpBldUAs750N72JymVLS6NqLEBJ0Sab6FRYmX9z9bb6PNgeDzMHUtDQwARBMX6feEoEkQYS5D3Bqg_IexEtykPxdcO4-QkM/s400/P6060127.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479886686892774914" />

Here they are on the 9/12/09 at roughly 1 month old.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu6jZ6UsDJ_POqX5Apu3u5vjuBw-e0vZ40pf2coV7PYQlb2mq0LCXsKr7DuNSUqhIKi8BFrsHAd5F98vbBBtnLnMOUayU_o5_549bFhT_2ZoRseAUQCkvJKfbiVJPhKIYm7m6S9S0qYlc/s400/PC040031.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413447082814578290" />
9/12/09

Here is an image of some seedlings at 2.5 months old, 7/01/10

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4zhC66olnsJWq0Y05ctbKTbJHdjrtTyoK3MxT0iGNPkfqDtxU3xGRhtRJfUuNAztcrCpa63yhvzrvvtXhZ6S8JCnNUjK4yw6NUG7vra2QwvpCmeCJ-7bgtDITqaSbrZh2h0fv1MBv0BA/s400/P1170210.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431642613006869506" />
7/01/10

Here they are on the 7/06/10 at 7.5 months old.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzYKauRSS4WGaQOBQOtEFHHHc4Ol0h8V-MbVpz-_O57k9WQ51VttdD3sbIwG4apr_jIQXtrv0EDEOA9VO-IK_KZLYfar9mKpkOurrTD4Ya2q0mFgeF9bI9uNtU2N7cUtP4EkgMlJpRCgA/s400/P6060129.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479886665556767426" />
7/06/10

I will grow some more seedlings soon as I have found these to be very satisfying to grow!Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-48596143779318364742010-06-06T21:19:00.000-07:002010-06-06T21:34:49.627-07:00Trichocereus Bridgesii & Trichocereus Peruvianus SeedlingsThese seedlings are were sown 4/11/09 so are now just over 8 months old. They have been slightly neglected in terms of getting regular watering which is why they are still rather small. Next season I am sure they will pick up the slack (as long as I do too!). Originally I planted out 20 T. Bridgesii & 50 T. Peruvianus seeds into clear row so that they could be differentiated. However my dad accidentally tipped the whole lot of seedlings all over the floor! I rescued as many as I could but as they were still tiny & fragile seedlings so many were lost. They were also mixed between the two species.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu0kt2cJys206vgs1CHQPwvKPZA3lKZiICXLPdpANjbvOPKoifZcL9s2CHPqmq4Ojnp3NoKvILvyndHsj0qPGMY8vykkBDBLEIVj9k0iJ-MFEp7pEyMfmr-DjReY3UzU-LFv72t87nx0c/s400/P6060126.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479883087039628386" />
Despite the mixing of the two species mentioned above - it is now clear to see the difference between the two. It was also my first post on this blog! So this is a special little guy. I've had this seedling since sometime in November 09 so it is around 8 months old now. It actually looks like a cactus now! Its been growing under a makeshift water-bottle humidity dome on my windowsill. It is now fully acclimatised to the outside humidity.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9cqw0WkE98Q2la0jxkLPFz7cbHjhGKUXFZlknlXfenQDDcGAevEg6WqAhTfg4h-I8wgdQPxSFQrjuzbPjc1xnh6ZMPd-XvTBVza7GZUBSRmuCj090wvN48vCxIrg1vZbeCNX0QY2YzY8/s400/P6060116.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479880712570941570" />
Its still the cutest little thing despite its spines.

Here is a picture of how it looked in December 09 around a month old.Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-86067489298978126682010-06-06T21:00:00.000-07:002010-06-06T21:07:27.830-07:00Pereskiopsis SpathulataI've had these since 22/03/10, so over 2 months now. They have shown some good growth & have rooted well. Unfortunately I'm not going to see incredible growth due to the lower light levels during the winter season. Hopefully they will grow enough for me to take some more clones of them & maybe even start some grafting in the spring!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2Kj-lvk3AjfbpAs8gYREoWkVXtDQxKULvfbD-xdVHgv1FoQmF693Y6oKW-aIXMyTLine9CP23dBdoHtSAE3d5WPqzayoCiNWT3nsedZc2S5k-2nIF5UFoXwreT4jkBfCo5Wema3W4iC8/s400/P6060113.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479877979069264610" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaaBZajFHc60Ved9gUHf575KPAuN5vfBUqiwGxhyphenhyphenxbxPer-sRUoQTJ_NVEB1AdQm6pNTuUXeSbcIVbrzF6w8_w5Em16qfEPgUuJ23KuVr7JRLDXtlsb7sseHYhfxbb89y7_ZwQN9wlnwM/s400/P6060114.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479877991422537490" />

I have another planted outside, I am going to compare the growth rate between the ones kept indoors & out to see which is more beneficial.Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-86124776732149243302010-06-06T20:37:00.000-07:002010-06-06T21:00:14.286-07:00Mega Plant Update!I haven't been keeping up to date with my blogging unfortunately. So this will be an update of almost all of my collection!
Its become winter here in NZ so things are starting to shut down. But unlike the UK the winters are mild and there is the occasional sunny day so some things are still growing (slowly).
I'll start with my windowsill cacti.

This Lophophora Williamsii var. Caespitosa graft was done on the 4/12/09, It is now just over 7 months old. It was my first attempt at grafting any cacti & I must say its gone brilliantly - beginners luck perhaps! Its grown to 3.5+cm in diameter & has sprouted 6 pups! Two of which are already <2cm!
Here are some pics:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMt0_sLok1tDXOPcL7FwdGFt1hCA1xJUTcXeiK76p3SJP1gnHXjFUJvl9vAa9Bd9vNma46zX9T1q3HLmWcQvXlvAPTsnvcVtO1b1QUcAIdu6QLtSFJR5aL-8iHJSn8Dq7oWacbIDxDr2I/s400/P6060117.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479874004924592450" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxQ2YuCdzSS7PKYEbeBqjpGax71kxUfDYCQmYenKW1EYodF1NDFPxIQUciCTSrxxowSdGTNf8PfrluvrWQ4aEyTRBgVq-kZyAN6Xf7PHAbz5S54bmbQdqncuDt5lRBym7XiLb2KTPd9R4/s400/P6060118.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479874014051829458" />
Provocative!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkqXwEJs_ToDLyp9JZmntFIbasmKTxJRANHzrrZFnJgyF-hKw_KZodtDbY_ATrJ11Mt10wVC7p9NjNwqhQRqT4Nsyd41lReEqol2_qJs2F_2b60BZMyrRinPAVPsdrcrfokvyvWKRl0Rw/s400/P6060119.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479874024706786306" />
Here you can see one of the pups pupping! It is an ugly prickly leafy cactus that grows like a weed - But it is a cactus (a true cactus). This means that grafts of all other cacti will take to them easily. This includes Peyote!
Due to its leaves and jungle-cactus nature it is an extremely fast growing plant - I have heard it can grow 4cm in a week.
It has a very thin steam unlike other cactus which makes it ideal for seedling grafting. This is its main use among cactus cultivators.

As peyote are so difficult to come by in NZ my plan was to grow seeds & graft them onto Pereskiopsis. Within a few years I can grow a respectable collection of grandfather-like peyotes.
The growth rate is incredible when grafting with Pereskiopsis; a peyote will grow from a seed to a flowering plant in a year instead of 10 years in the wild!

HOWEVER! I have searched for this plant far and wide, on the internet & at specialist cactus nurseries and the result is that is absolutely does not exist in NZ atall!
...
Well apart from the three cuttings I have sitting in front of me!
I have managed to get sent some cuttings sent to me from a Kiwi on the forum site 'shroomary'. He is currently living in Aus & sent the cuttings from there.
Incredibly they were not seized by customs & are did not die from the journey!

I will plant the unrooted cuttings directly into a moist soil & place them in a humidity dome (makeshift) & out of direct sunlight. After two weeks they should plump up and grow like a beast!

Heres is a picture of my new babies:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgatqcJXKDVj0s_JSll3a-Ez1JH88MwdiTxKvLtSqFFrqjlXPfuyTRWAW4FiMJ_0SNDERWxAJCWVoF1AIWWfaAX3238tjvgPG6NtFfxHHJsYgxY86GO5ZOYX_KdBr3ZwD8Y_3vzAad3efc/s400/P3190098.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450596177515416530" />
Pereskiopsis Spathulata unrooted CuttingsJoshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-27391450303542332802010-03-19T22:53:00.000-07:002010-03-19T23:00:36.156-07:00New Plant Calea Zacatechichi (Dream Herb)Yesterday I received a small rooted cutting of Calea Zacatechichi. As usual this was expensive ($60) due to it being rare in NZ.
It is apparently a very 'bullet proof' plant so I have no worried with it surviving!
I'm going to plant it out in a similar fashion to the Salvia, but with a slightly higher draining soil mix.
Hopefully I will have a harvestable bush before the winter. I am really interested in the effects of this plant - I cannot wait to use it!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh9F8yj8nIwINXagZS5_S5K7nJiSOXf2mfz7V7aZQfhyphenhyphenR2wz8VVvXtOVf2pjhwf49Kg2LLSwoWp4LWGmpcKJGKGYmo6a_auA4b-rL7WYsIvL95Ln-fTMZQ0tsRa9EM1nrZOMpHy53Fixg/s400/P3190099.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450591424152213234" />
Calea Zacatechichi rooted cutting.Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-60489697626130481952010-03-19T22:40:00.000-07:002010-03-19T22:52:13.017-07:00Crazy Pupping on Peyote GraftOkay so this graft must be over 3 months old and it suddenly starting pupping! 3 emerged around the sides!
Aswell as two emerging from the areoles near the growth centre. They were Organically grown in the same Environment (North Island) as I will be growing them so they should be better adapted.

Nicotiana Tabacum is said to be one of the most significant entheogen in human history. Nicotiana Tabacum is originally from South america where is was used ceremonially, for healing purposes and to drive away bad spirits by the Native Tribes. Later it was cultivated and traveled North where it was used by Native americans for similar ceremonial purposes for thousands of years.

I planted the seeds into a special seed propagator, this has 5X4 Individual cells, a bottom tray, and a lid. This allows me to bottom water easily and the lid increases humidity.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwmgVy9xjWJFIp-aZ6JMgRNdaUbQfbHaLzOmG7iB5_Lf5MYAZMU9jBAFwGpup7pQ1UoAKNr8FvdwcPbgfytj3TYPInAroc2dpWOosL998RxqiNaVE-3_wpFfre4HU662S6bhVdMz71cfc/s400/P2160103.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439405228246125266" />

Nicotiana Tabacum seedlings must be transplanted early on so as to not damage the tap root (this causes sluggish growth). Therefore they will only be in the propagator for a week at most until I plant them out. I have brought cheap plant bags instead of pots to save money!

Hopefully I will have a good germination rate, although they have been sow late in season.
Some of the seeds seem to have turned a white colour - perhaps the emerging roots?Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-40416500891656208872010-02-17T17:44:00.000-08:002010-02-17T18:17:13.153-08:00Pilosocereus Azureus & Peyote GraftYesterday (17/02/10) I found a HUGE Pilosocereus Azureus for sale at a local garden centre for a very small price $12 NZD.
I could see it was in active growth and perfect for grafting my last Peyote onto!
Here is a pic of how it looked when I brought it:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_pWh4ehABx5uZog5edCE02Lp8ssldR3J_LKmL-WoenQut0jlwzPBKADCjwYlgyK2FBZmui6KyAPt6kEosYEAwoiObpMrAlAg_xN6mhWeJ6-IbdUwCEh9NQL_7n69IZce1IzsazWZheuc/s400/P2160099.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439394464642328018" />
Pilosocereus Azureus

Grafting a Peyote onto something as tall as this has a few problems, not to mention finding elastic bands that long!
However I remember reading an obscure grafting guide which mentioned a simple way around this problem. Spines of a large cactus such as T. Bridgesii are used to impale through the root stock at an appropriate level. Rubber bands can be attached to these to hold the scion on!
A simple solution!

Not having a large enough T. Bridgesii I used split BBQ skewers to replace the spines.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8xjhp_ZpfmmXaqoUlm9qnvKZxkPPL5ic_mhKaoM4P8ToawBE3VxMcDtGt_9ODwF7C_rMzqRrNQBWfwoNWTcp6sVaM64mn4t66GHDce4yknb-5CWmu4afgxEuaPLVRGmaLWKoHVjYcNN4/s400/P2170092.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439397724224956402" />

The operation was tricky, and my hand looked like a pin cushion by the end!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-k9nt1kOYGHAgZOpdrWcGJQqhzCYc5ST77VrI16GmhrzPduu4b0MxOvIvpIGrQlggao7rESPJACWMtXeYZatXSno1M3HGbZLft78ayHt8SYNb84G-7FgTH1pd0GF0sVAKFnOqlKRFj_c/s400/P2170097.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439397755768261938" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibiTsWTuNjblE8sw3saeuf7aTNC1B39zMrqHTkZiXgaOVFkro5yz-2-Y5AIqVIpjVlyYHcAnCcDEBEbAHBq_Vbx0-YPbpRc8Ubug3LFjGNOZB2YC4tDj4rfigvkoWJjm2g2fap9nSTn-s/s400/P2170095.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439397747830406370" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMK0A9OlYGeIf2eMMwjgEQj4YBvADsq3tT1cv_wMvNOwqJR8BIDIVg47eNe0s1gZbfScmgc2eIzmqd2oVV0epkvjhrfGfKSHtMOuWPQcy6QUgbiuhllFa_cDltbJsKzwPg7YyPa36L8QA/s400/P2170094.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439397740398964802" />
Pilosocereus Azureus and Lophophora Williamsii Graft

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtAHJv9Btz_aKCec26JdixoPTXbDQWSSBPOew4dv0GoEs_2g1VJUfGvBbJ5742tRtQHmvf_VLJ8FgQWk8VTO4OWRNbbw5_XAu-ax5fS8Swb76H-XgpdhIsAlCFPSHUUCKmaWrYH8aBkhM/s400/P2170093.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439397735843182338" />

The Vascular Cambium on this cactus was much larger than what I've seen on San Pedro and other Trichocereus, Hopefully this will make for a better bond between Rootstock & Scion.

The Pilosocereus Azureus comes very highly recommended as a grafting stock for Peyote.
I am hoping that due to the much larger rootstock that this graft will have much more impressive results!Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-30057249401417319362010-02-16T23:18:00.000-08:002010-06-06T21:53:40.221-07:00Salvia Divinorum UpdateI've had my Salvia planted for 10 days now and the growth rate is fantastic! This can be seen in the following pics:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht5oG1Zb2ZF5MvVsCQVAJGUjcVC7atX6X3NJejK_rqZAQ-pOoGsxWaD6J5bzzNJGcmEu0oiHrN8o-r4ZUUbLRHkrMfpxFZx5BzKm2uLFSZfAM_YMXyCv1LV-uYnAKPXkGizP0Xqq8lppo/s400/P2070070.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435737773850762930" />
Salvia Divinorum

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOPnk4fYnhnyyO0kHMASygw-MwiGFHHlc1_dnH8AIcMPF5lQjtF2fUw88d8ELGcaIC7HAa765Vg7z-yb4cMYhZJiHu1DZTzn97uRZuvFdzQDWJNvIbi31GJjut_wrk8k_91bw8bzTY6sI/s400/P2070074.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435737793185488818" />
Salvia Divinorum showing new growth at nodules.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMex_-r2tCeDIhbQOKn-9eJyKL7o7cYfpzak_QMxMp99zvZCti1lPM6oSd603Cvo4OVrn0UpFsVX-TkrhnN7i7NvTuug_tyBZVcXYQIDs6ZkGG2qBk4O1LFCwEW_HgaPSULBVSgIjKAnw/s400/P2070073.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435737786462665074" />
Salvia Divinorum showing new growth at nodules.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWqOzrzVFHhOZhafhXE-mTpFy5en5UeuRl7SQlqnH-yF9Mwr2aIFWFW0_GqUtk-yV27WCaGb-In2C4GyMxaOQs8U2_DoF5_CmQwpz_pru0PbSmNuzl90bQljuXAeFrfCGZzHJXrvtkd-k/s400/P2070072.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435737782192440098" />
Salvia Divinorum showing new growth at nodules.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 500px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi19dH3pgmtNidc31pjKUqJEq2A-kWPKGPrItW3-Hu6Oj1J-R1E2xVk2zKCdjI_Bzc2Oj5R06aDai-PAZVYT9Fr2O7l7fcYcO_NhaP5ldhNv2V9JtAOU_OdIYvyE8682oyMl50psA0wklY/s400/P2070075.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435739262057435314" />
Sally in my very empty grow-room, hopefully find her some friends soon!

I am very happy with this progress, and I can't wait to see how it continues! :>Joshua Harrisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02641425516545053607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388120533137746395.post-8730142936060143002010-01-31T22:03:00.000-08:002010-01-31T22:29:46.609-08:00Lophophora Williamsii var. Caespitosa GraftToday I grafted a pup from my Lophophora Williamsii var. Caespitosa. This particular pup seems to be cristata or have some sort of mutation (monstrose). It was grafted on top of a Unidentified Trichocereus that I picked up from a local garden centre.
The graft went well and the Vascular Cambiums seemed to be lined up fine. I did have some trouble trying to fix an elastic band over the scion (it kept sliding around).
Only time will tell how well it will do!

I hope this to grow well, I am really interested in how the Lopho will form!
Here are some pics:
